The term 'Watermen' is derived from the description of all the professionals who worked on the waters of London's Thames River. Our area watermen include all types of the these professionals, too. Locally, the term 'Commercial Watermen' describes the men and women who harvest seafood from the rivers and tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay and have played an important part in the economy, history, and ecology of coastal Virginia for over 400 years. This museum preserves and interprets the history and culture of all watermen with exhibits that feature re-enactors, photographs, tools, equipment, and full sized boats and models.
Located on the York River in Yorktown, Virginia, the Museum hosts the Pirate Invasion in April, Oyster Roast and the Folk Festival in September, 1781 Battle Anniversary/Heritage Festival in October, and Chili Cook-off in November with land/seafood, crafts, and demonstrations. Popular education programs based on Virginia SOLs, designed for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, are offered year-round. Programs for scouts, older students, and adults may also be arranged. The museum Gift Shop features a unique selection of work by local artists and nautical gifts.
