Bethel Beach Natural Area Preserve is managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. The preserve consists of sandy shoreline, low dunes and salt marsh habitat separating the eastern side of Winter Harbor in Mathews County from the Chesapeake Bay. Wind, waves and currents create a changing mosaic of maritime habitats. Scan the preserve during any season to discover over 185 bird species, including 25 kinds of shorebirds.
The preserve provides habitat for the federally threatened northeastern beach tiger beetle and beach nesting shore birds. To protect these species, designated sections of the preserve may be closed during specific periods of the year. In addition, sunbathing and picnicking are prohibited.
Know Before You Go - This preserve has no restrooms, trash cans, access to drinking water or on-site staff. Plan your trip around bathroom breaks, practice “leave no trace” by packing out trash, bring plenty of water and a cell phone for emergencies.
Parking at Bethel Beach is limited. A full parking area indicates the preserve has reached capacity. If you arrive and no spaces are available, please return another time. Do not park illegally, in non-designated locations or in such a way as to block in other visitors.
