From your perch at the southern tip of Virginia's Eastern Shore, visited by Capt. John Smith in 1608, view barrier islands, birds on the Atlantic Flyway, and in the distance the Cape Charles Light and the Cheseapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.
Spend 3-4 days at a boat-access-only seaside island lodge surrounded by a wildlife refuge and some of the best paddling on the East Coast. A 1920s fishing cabin on privately-owned Holly Bluff Island will be our basecamp for exploring the barrier islands at the southern tip of the DelMarVa peninsula. The bird-watching is sublime.
Each day we will paddle around places like Mockhorn Island, Skidmore, Smith Island Lighthouse and Fisherman Island. As a special treat, we will harvest oysters and crabs for a seafood roast on the deck, also a great place for yoga and sunsets.
Paddle with the Authors: Bill and Mary Burnham, kayak guides and authors of "Kayaking for Everyone," "Hiking Virginia" and the "Florida Keys Paddling Atlas."
