Approached through ivy-covered gates, down a lane bordered by tall cedar and dogwood trees, stands Airville Plantation Bed and Breakfast. Slip back in time as you sit on the veranda and watch the sunset over 400 acres.
The original two-story home was built in 1756 by John Dixon Sr., a Colonial clergy man, and has a gambrel roof which is typical of the Colonial period. In the early 19th century the home was bought by Thomas Smith, a local merchant and delegate to the Virginia Legislature. Smith erected a large, three-story addition to the home in the Federal Style, including a towering spiral staircase that begins in the front entrance and continues to the third floor.
Behind the main house sits a lumber house, smoke house, round dairy and the Overseer's Cottage, which is now a guest suite.
