Day One: Start your experience in Martinsville-Henry County by exploring our fall foliage among some of our most colorful locations. A trip along 57 will take you along the Smith River as it winds its way through the county. Take a pit stop and explore some of our Smith River Small Towns such as Fieldale and Bassett. From an exciting paddle on the river to delving into history at the Bassett Historical Center, there is something interesting to suit all tastes in these historic communities.
As you continue along 57, stop off at the Philpott Lake Dam Visitor Center. There you can learn more about the history and wildlife of the area and the overlook offers some of the best fall views in Martinsville-Henry County.
Spend the rest of the day at nearby Fairy Stone State Park, located in Patrick County, which features a 168-acre lake adjoining Philpott Reservoir. You can explore the lake by paddleboats, canoes, and more which are available for rent. With a Virginia fishing license, you can also drop a line all around the park and enjoy catching largemouth bass, crappie, catfish and the October-stocked trout that the lake has to offer. Hikers can also enjoy 10 miles of multi-use trails throughout the park.
Stay the night under the stars immersed in the glory of the season as Fairy Stone State Park offers cabins, a campground, group camping, and an equestrian campground.
Day Two: Continue your experience with a regional adventure to the Blue Ridge Parkway. By following 57 and then route 8, you will wind your way through the mountains and on to the BRP and the Rocky Knob Loop. Be sure to stop off in Floyd, a part of “The Crooked Road” - Virginia’s heritage music trail. Rich music heritage can be experienced at Floyd Country Store and County Sales - home of the Friday Night Jamboree and the world’s largest collection of traditional bluegrass and old-time music.
As you get on the Parkway, head south towards Meadows of Dan. This stretch of the Blue Ridge will offer some spectacular views at hotspots such as Rocky Knob and Mabry Mill – one of the most photographed locations on the entire BRP. From this area of the parkway, you can choose how to continue your fall adventure: exit off of in Meadows of Dan and explore regional favorites such as delicious treats at Nancy’s Candy Company and the picturesque view from Lovers Leap Wayside or journey on down the Blue Ridge Parkway and visit Groundhog Mountain, Stone Mountain, and more!
