Smithfield and Isle of Wight County are located on the Pagan River, the opposite shore of the James River, across from Jamestown. Discovered by Captain John Smith and other early settlers, Smithfield was incorporated in 1752 by Arthur Smith IV. It became a town of industry with four plants curing the world renowned "Smithfield Ham." Today it hosts one of the largest meat processors in the world, Smithfield Foods, Inc.
Day 1: Start your trip at the Visitor Center on Main St. - also home to the Arts Center @ 319 - a gallery/gift shop with 8 resident artists. Visit the Isle of Wight County Museum and discover local history and the worlds oldest ham!
Take the Walking Tour of downtown with over 50 historic buildings, including the 1750 Courthouse and the 1932 African-American Schoolhouse Museum.
Afterwards, visit Darden's Country Store, the family's smokehouse and farm. Pick up local cheese, meats, and goodies.
Day 2: Breakfast at Smithfield Gourmet Bakery, then tour SummerWind Vineyards. Next, visit Historic St. Luke's Church (c1632), the oldest existing American church of English foundation and only surviving original brick Gothic church.
Have lunch waterside at Captain Chuck-a-Muck's in Rescue, featured on the Food Network.
Finish your visit with dinner at the Smithfield Inn.
