The town of Onancock was chartered in 1608 as a port and it has been a harbor town ever since. The town is surrounded on three sides by the Onancock Creek and stunning water views abound. Onancock is a favorite with boaters, who can dock in the harbor and then stroll into town for a day of shopping or an evening of dinner and drinks.
Start your day with breakfast at Janet’s General Store or The Corner Bakery. Janet’s serves up huge plates of French toast, hearty breakfast burritos and tasty breakfast sandwiches. Their lunch menu is filled with delicious sandwiches as well. The donuts at the Corner Bakery are legendary. If you’re not worried about getting messy try a cream puff, a powder sugar covered donut filled with cream.
When you want something more substantial you can choose from almost a dozen restaurants. You’ll find everything from scratch made pizza, to Irish pub food, fresh seafood and fine dining.
If Onancock Creek is calling your name, explore by kayak or paddleboard. Rent one from Burnham Guides at the harbor or bring your own. You can launch from the kayak dock located on the opposite side of Mt. Prospect Avenue from the harbor. If you’d like more than just a paddle, book with a local guide who can tell you all about the history of the town and the surrounding areas.
Onancock has a long history and there are several sights around town where you can learn about it. Visit Ker Place, a Federal period mansion, to learn about some of Onancock’s prominent residents of the past. At the historic Hopkins and Brother Store take a look at Onancock through the years and learn about the store’s role in the town’s history. The waterman culture is a way of life that is quickly vanishing on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
Downtown Onancock is dotted with shops and boutiques. Pick up a nice bottle of wine or some cheese at local gourmet markets, browse over a dozen art galleries or find a new outfit at a boutique clothing store.
When it’s time to rest your eyes you can choose from a boutique hotel, several B&Bs and vacation rentals.
