Explore how farming changed in Virginia history as well as what life was like farming in the past. This itinerary shows the many different facets of farming including the multitude of farm animals. Here are a few must-see attractions:
First stop: Meadow Farm Museum. The Meadow Farm Museum is an 1860 living history farm site and museum that presents programs and exhibits on the culture of the rural South. On selected weekends, they demonstrate seasonal activities in the farmhouse, barn, doctor’s office, blacksmith forge, kitchen, fields, and pastures.
Next stop: Maymont. This is a 100-acre American estate, an extraordinary gift given to the community by James and Sallie Dooley, who lived there from 1893 to 1925. Maymont offers a farm exhibit in addition to their Japanese and Italian gardens, wildlife exhibits, and historic mansion. The Maymont Farm provides hands-on animal encounters and insight into farm life where children and adults can find roosters, sheep, goats, and more.
Next stop: Keystone Truck and Tractor Museum. Experience the last century of agricultural heritage: fully restored antique farm tractors, ongoing restoration projects and other farm related equipment at Keystone Truck and Tractor
Museum. Keystone offers visitors more than the farm with a time warp of antique road trucks, classic cars, vintage gas pumps, oil cans, automotive signage, clocks, advertising posters of yesteryear and so much more!
Next stop: Misty Morning Sunrise Farm. Learn methods for supplying animals with necessary water without being wasteful, how to collect and reuse rainwater, and more. You’ll find a visit to our bee hives a thoroughly educational experience, as the science and art of beekeeping is explained.
Final stop: Pamplin Historical Park. Experience the lives of the common soldier, civilian and enslaved people at this National Landmark 424-acre campus which features four historic homes, The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier, 5 miles of trails and the Breakthrough Battlefield. The plantation features a reconstructed working kitchen and slave quarter, a kitchen garden with authentic period plantings, and reconstructed livestock and tobacco barns. Interpreters bring history to life through programs including gardening demonstrations at Tudor Hall. Come and explore agriculture in the 19th century.
