These self-guided walking and driving tours through the towns of South Boston, Halifax, and Halifax County will give you an appreciation of the early history of this southern Virginia region.

See the photos and descriptions of these homes, plantations, and buildings. Print the maps for each section of the county you wish to visit and mark those special places you don't want to miss.

The Mountain Road Historic District has been called "the prettiest village in Virginia." The street is lined with notable 19th century homes and buildings. Jump back into the car and drive about a mile further down the road to The L. E. Coleman African-American Museum.

South Boston is one of the largest and architecturally interesting Victorian historic districts in Southside Virginia. Near the river is The Prizery which holds the Crossing of the Dan exhibit and the Cage Gallery

River Road, SR 659, is the single most historic area in Halifax County. In the decades preceding the Civil War, most of the wealth of the county was centered along River Road. As fortunes rose, so did the mansions, equal to any in Virginia in style and elegance. Near the beginning of the tour is Berry Hill and near the end on this road is Carters Tavern, both National Historic sites, as well as five more in between.

The area west and south of South Boston, an old stage coach route, is noted for its many fine examples of architecture from the 18th & 19th century. This route includes more National Historic sites - Glennmary and Wiley's Tavern. The original 1797 Bloomsburg home on this trip was the only county location specified on the very ealy maps made at the time.

The area northeast of South Boston has several 18th & 19th century plantation houses. While in this area spend some time to see Staunton River Power Plant, the Staunton River Battlefiel State Park, Randolph Visitor's Center, and Mulberry.
