Lynchburg, Virginia was once the wealthiest city in the nation for its size, and remained in the top three for many years. The Lynchburg area attracted many famous names including Thomas Jefferson, who once called Lynchburg 'the most interesting spot in the state'. Many of these notable figures built impressive homes in and around Lynchburg, and your group will enjoy touring these unforgettable structures. Just outside the city limits you will find Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson’s retreat home. The octagonal home is another fine example of Jefferson’s architectural genius. Next visit Point of Honor. Possibly named for duels fought on the front lawn, this beautiful Federal Syle home was built in 1815 by Dr. George Cabell, Patrick Henry’s personal physician.    Next, enjoy lunch at any of the fine eateries in historic downtown.  By foot or by car, Lynchburg’s seven historic districts are a must see. These prosperous neighborhoods sprang up in Lynchburg during the 19th Century when tobacco tycoons, shoe production, doctors, and attorneys made Lynchburg the wealthiest city in the nation for its size. The impressive Queen Ann and Federal style mansions offer both an educational experience and unparalleled delight for the lovers of history and architecture. A self-guided walking tour brochure is available at the Lynchburg Visitor Information Center. AVOCA, located in nearby Altavista is a country Victorian home constructed in 1901. Avoca is a Virginia Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Home site of the revolutionary patriot, Colonel Charles Lynch, this landmark features eight rooms, a brick kitchen, smoke house, visitor center and gift shop. Return to Lynchburg's fine selection of restaurants to top your day off with a gracious meal, served with a side order of southern hospitality!
