Plan an exciting outdoor adventure for your family in Central Virginia that features something for every member of the family.
Gardens: Explore the Annie duPont Formal Gardens, free and open to the public every day during business hours at James Madison’s Montpelier. This terraced garden, designed by celebrated landscape architect Charles Gillette, boasts a multitude of peonies, bearded and Japanese irises, and day lily varieties.
Family Hiking: Go for a hike over 8+ miles of walking trails at Montpelier, including the 200-acre Landmark Forest, an Old Growth Forest preserved as it existed more than two centuries ago, with oaks, poplars and hickories. Explore on your own or take a quarterly walking tour. There's also a 3.5-mile Montpelier Loop Trail that winds through the Forest, pastures, and wildflower meadows and offers spectacular views of the property and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Dogs on leashes are welcome! Trail and tree maps are available in the David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center.
Local Culture: While in Mr. Madison’s neighborhood, visit the historic towns of Orange and Gordonsville. In addition to historic structures - such as St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Orange and the Exchange Hotel Civil War Medical Museum in Gordonsville - the main streets boast an eclectic mix of antiques and vintage stores, art and gift galleries, and farmers' and artisans' markets. Take in the local flavor when stopping for a bite to eat at any of the cafes, bakeries, and even food trucks!
Fun on the Water: The waterways of Central Virginia have some of the most popular recreation in the area, and folks at the Rapidan River Kayak Company will provide everything you need for a great family adventure. They provide small group instruction and tours, and will provide boats, paddles, and all safety equipment.
Horseback Rides: To see the beautiful Virginia countryside from a different perspective, consider a trail ride at Oakland Heights Farm, between Orange and Gordonsville. The friendly staff will guide you through an area rich in history and natural beauty. Ask about their authentic bull-riding rodeo events held monthly from May through September.
U-Pick Farms: Gather your own bounty for your welcome-home meal from a variety of u-pick farms: Liberty Mills Farm, which also is the site of Virginia's largest corn maze; Miller Farms Market, renowned for its sweet corn and strawberries; and The Market at Grelen, which also has a cafe, gift shop, and walking trails.
