The typical summer family vacation has changed, but day trips and shorter vacations are still vacations all the same. A rural destination offers space and beauty, something that Nelson County embodies all summer long. The Montebello Fish Hatchery offers an opportunity to observe stock fish up-close. The hatchery supplies over 150,000 trout to stocked ponds and lakes per year.
If you want to continue with a fishing theme, consider a stay at Montebello Camping and Fishing Resort, which offers cabin rentals, lake views, and Rainbow Trout fishing. The nearby Montebello Country Store is chock full of unique gifts, Montebello souvenirs, and camping & fishing gear. Pick up some groceries in a less-crowded store than the one at home while you’re there.
Nelson’s history continues to draw people from all over the country, especially the tragedy of Hurricane Camille. In 1969, remnants of the hurricane dumped torrential rainfall over the county. Historic flooding cost many lives and left bare patches of exposed bedrock on the sides of Nelson’s mountains, which can still be seen today. Montebello was one of the communities that was most severely affected by the flooding. If you want to learn more about this historical event up-close, try Nelson’s self-guided tour of places of interest. Maps are available at the Nelson County Visitors Center in Lovingston and the Oakland Museum in Arrington.
