Virginia is known as the Mother of American Presidents. Eight presidents in all—Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Harrison, Tyler, Taylor and Wilson—have hailed from the Old Dominion. On this tour we’ll “get to know” four of these presidents at their homes in central and western Virginia. We’ll tour Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, James Madison’s Montpelier, James Monroe’s Highland and the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace and Presidential Library. We will also get a guided tour of “The Lawn” at the University of Virginia, founded and designed by Jefferson. Each site presents a diverse experience that draws the visitor into the world in which these famous men lived. Our Virginia-born presidents were flesh-and-blood humans, not statues, and their lives were dynamic and extraordinary. This engaging tour is meant to encourage and provoke thought as we consider presidents whose intellect, imagination and effort helped shape and guide America. We’ll learn about their families, too, and about how life in America influenced their day-to-day routines and decisions. And although they’d love to come with us we’ll step away from our presidents for a bit to do some downtown shopping and enjoy some yummy meals together.
