The old saying “Behind every successful man is a woman” has become trite in today’s world and sheds little real credit on what women have contributed to America. We know about our founding Virginia presidents and early leaders but it is time we get to know the women who were their partners in life. On this tour these dynamic women step forward from the shadows of their famous husbands and reveal themselves to be persons of intellect and influence. We’ll encounter Martha Washington, Dolley Madison, Martha Jefferson, Letitia Tyler and even Pocahontas as we tour historic homes, churches, taverns and attractions. Each woman was a story unto herself and had a remarkable life of her own. On this tour visit the backroads church where Martha Washington worshipped, tour Dolley Madison’s home, Montpelier, and learn about the life of Virginia’s gentry class at Shirley Plantation. At Scotchtown we’ll come to know Patrick Henry and hear of the tragic life of his wife. and be treated to a hearthside cooking demonstration, Colonial meal and first ladies’ fashion show and a class in 18th-century courtesies. We’ll do a little wine tasting, too (the Jeffersons would approve).
