LOVE in Tazewell County

Come experience Tazewell County's rich heritage with beautiful scenery. Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia, Tazewell County lies on the Alleghany Plateau and is characterized by its mountainous terrain. A secondary continental divide separates the watersheds to the New River Valley and the Tennessee River Valley. Stop at special themed LOVEworks throughout the county including a one-of-a-kind barn quilt LOVEwork.

Day 1

LOVE at Real McCoy Cabins

LOVEwork at Real McCoy Cabins

Start off your trip in Pocahontas, Virginia's first coalfield boom town. Today, Pocahontas preserves its coal mining heritage. Tour the world's first Exhibition Coal Mine, a National Historic Landmark and Virginia's Official Coal Heritage Zone, and see spectacular 13 foot tall coal seams. Take a spin on the Original Pocahontas ATV Trail offering 65 miles of scenic twists and turns in a deep-woods setting. The system provides spectacular views of surrounding mountains and historic downtown, and can be accessed from two trail heads. The LOVEwork at Real McCoy Cabins depicts the resort's rustic luxury.

Day 2

LOVE in Tazewell

LOVEwork in Tazewell

Continue on to the historic town of Tazewell. The town of Tazewell is a picturesque community and is also one of the oldest communities in Southwestern Virginia. Today some of the historical buildings and houses still exist. A walking tour is available by the Tazewell County Historical Society. The LOVEwork in Tazewell County stands four feet tall in front of the Tazewell County Historical Society and faces west looking down Main Street toward Deskin Mountain. Take a ride through The Back of the Dragon offering thirty two miles and 438 curves of knee dragging fun. Ideal for sports cars or motorcycles, this road offers the most spectacular views you can find on the east coast!

Enjoy an afternoon birding, hiking, camping, fishing or relaxing at the 54-acre lake at Cavitt's Creek Park Campground. Learn about the cultural heritage of the Appalachian Region with exhibits on the 500 year-old Native American Village discovered on site at Crab Orchard Museum & Pioneer Park. On warmer days, hop over to the Lincolnshire Aqua Park for fun for all ages! The park features a 21-acre lake with boat launching facilities, kayak and paddleboard rentals, tennis courts, picnic shelters, Kidzown playground, walking trail, Junior Olympic size swimming pool, baby pool and more.

Day 3

LOVE at Burke's Garden

LOVE at Burke's Garden

Spend the day in Burke's Garden. Oftentimes referred to as "God's Thumbprint" because of its view from the air, this mountain-ringed bowl is 10 miles in diameter and filled with some of the most fertile farmland in the state. The area, at 3,000 feet, is the highest mountain valley in Virginia. Visitors can buy baked goods and vegetables, take a scenic ride or bike on area roads, hike and hunt in nearby Jefferson National Forest. The LOVEwork at Burke's Garden is a barn quilt located just off of a Virginia Scenic Byway Route 623. The LOVE barn quilt compliments a number of beautiful barn quilts that can be found in the Burke's Garden area.
