Day 1: Norfolk, Virginia  – Where History Meets the Harbor. 

Start off your tour at Nauticus, a fun, exciting and interactive maritime discovery center, to explore the power of the sea. Discover the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, where you will be introduced to over 200 years of naval activity in Hampton Roads. Walk the teak decks of Battleship Wisconsin, one of the last and largest battleships built by the U.S. Navy. Stand beneath her 16-inch guns and feel the excitement of being aboard a historic warship. 

Visit to the MacArthur Memorial, the final resting place of General Douglas MacArthur and his wife. Discover the compelling story of this five-star Army General and the millions of American men and women who served our nation during the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Occupation of Japan and the Korean War. 

Set sail for a sunset cruise aboard the American Rover Sailing Cruise. Sail down the Elizabeth River with a guided tour of the waterfront where passengers can discover maritime history up close.. 

Enjoy dinner at Orapax and savor delicious family recipes and a local favorite for over 50 years!

End the evening with a famous waffle cone from Doumar’s. Abe Doumar invented this sweet novelty by rolling a waffle into a cone shape, to which he added ice cream. Doumar’s still bakes cones on the original cone machines. 

Day 2: Navigating Newport News

Arrive in Newport News, where the spirit of the sea meets centuries of American history. Begin your day at the Mariners' Museum and Park, recognized by the U.S. Congress as “America’s National Maritime Museum.” 2-3 hours gives you enough time to explore the museum. 

Afterward, enjoy a cup of exceptionally roasted coffee and a bite to eat at Column 15 at The Mariners' (located in the museum), offering scenic views and a peaceful pause before the afternoon’s discoveries. 

Continue to Historic Endview, a beautifully preserved 18th-century home that witnessed the Peninsula Campaign of the Civil War. Through guided interpretation, step into the lives of those who experienced this defining chapter in American history. 1-1.5 hours is the perfect amount of time to visit without rushing. 

Head over to Indulge Bakery and Bistro for lunch, a local favorite known for its European-style bakery and bistro nestled in the heart of Historic Hilton Village.

After lunch, take time for a stroll through Historic Hilton Village, where a unique shopping experience offers everything from quality antiques and collectibles to artwork and more. We think 1-1.5 hours is the perfect amount of time to enjoy the village. 

Next, explore the rich history of the Newport News Shipyard at The Shipyard Experience. This museum-quality exhibit takes visitors on a historic journey through the iconic Newport News Shipyard and highlights surrounding landmarks, including Victory Landing Park and the Victory Arch, located at 25th Street and West Avenue. The Victory Arch commemorates the soldiers who embarked from Newport News to serve in World War I. Allow 30–45 minutes to explore.

End the day with dinner at Crab Shack on the James, where fresh, coastal flavors and a beautiful coastal sunset offer the perfect close to a day of exploration.

Day 3: Yorktown – Where History Meets the River 

After exploring the Peninsula, continue to the charming waterfront village of Yorktown, where the York River provides the perfect backdrop for an afternoon steeped in history and coastal beauty.

Begin your visit at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, where interactive exhibits, immersive films, and outdoor living-history areas tell the story of America's fight for independence. Guests can explore a recreated Continental Army encampment and Revolution-era farm while gaining a deeper appreciation for the events that shaped the nation.

From there, make your way to the historic waterfront at Riverwalk Landing. Lined with locally owned boutiques, art galleries, cafés, and restaurants, the Riverwalk is an ideal place to enjoy a leisurely afternoon. Relax on the beach, take in views of the York River, or enjoy a sweet treat while watching boats cruise by. During warmer months, visitors may also enjoy seasonal events, live music, and the free trolley that connects many of Yorktown's attractions.

History enthusiasts won't want to miss the opportunity to drive or walk portions of the Yorktown Battlefield, where General Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington in 1781, effectively ending the American Revolution. Scenic overlooks, monuments, and interpretive stops provide a memorable glimpse into one of the nation's most significant historical moments.

As the afternoon winds down, take the scenic drive along the Colonial Parkway toward Williamsburg. This picturesque route, managed by the National Park Service, connects Yorktown, Jamestown, and Williamsburg with beautiful river views, forests, and marshlands, making the journey just as memorable as the destination.

Day 4: Williamsburg – Historic Charm & Culinary Finish 

Arrive in Williamsburg to experience one of America's most iconic historic destinations. Spend the evening strolling through Colonial Williamsburg, the world's largest living history museum, where centuries-old streets come alive with costumed interpreters, restored buildings, horse-drawn carriages, and engaging demonstrations. Whether visiting a historic trades shop, touring the Governor's Palace, or simply wandering Duke of Gloucester Street, every corner offers a unique glimpse into colonial life. 

As evening approaches, explore Merchants Square, one of the nation's first planned shopping districts. Here you'll find an inviting mix of locally owned boutiques, specialty shops, breweries, wine bars, and restaurants offering everything from elevated Southern cuisine to casual fare.

For those looking to unwind, consider ending the day with a visit to The Williamsburg Winery or enjoy dinner at one of Colonial Williamsburg's historic taverns, where period-inspired menus and candlelit dining create an unforgettable experience.

As twilight settles over the cobblestone streets, Colonial Williamsburg takes on a mysterious atmosphere, making it the perfect setting for an unforgettable evening ghost tour. Day 5: Jamestown – Where America Began (½ day)

Begin your morning in Jamestown, the site of the first permanent English settlement in North America. Rich with history, archaeology, and interactive experiences, Jamestown offers visitors the opportunity to explore the origins of the nation through two complementary attractions.

Start at Jamestown Settlement, where history comes to life through immersive exhibits and outdoor living-history experiences. Board full-scale replicas of the three ships—Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery—that carried English settlers across the Atlantic in 1607. Explore recreated James Fort, interact with historical interpreters demonstrating 17th-century military drills and daily life, and visit the Powhatan Indian Village to learn about the culture and traditions of Virginia's Indigenous people.

Continue just minutes away to Historic Jamestowne, the original site of the 1607 settlement. Managed jointly by the National Park Service and Jamestown Rediscovery, this active archaeological site allows visitors to witness history still being uncovered. Walk among the foundations of the original fort, view artifacts recently excavated by archaeologists, and visit the Archaearium Museum, where centuries-old discoveries tell the remarkable story of America's first English colony.

Before departing, stop at the Glasshouse to watch skilled artisans continue one of America's oldest industries. Since 1608, glassmaking has been part of Jamestown's story, and today visitors can observe live glassblowing demonstrations while browsing handcrafted pieces created on-site.
