Virginia Loves Niche Sports

New sports venues, renovations and events make Virginia a top sports destination.  Below are some highlights:

New Transportation Options for Athletes and Spectators:


In early 2022 (Jan-Feb), an additional round-trip Amtrak train to Roanoke will depart DC in the morning and serve Alexandria, Burke, Manassas, Culpeper, Charlottesville, Lynchburg, and Roanoke.

Reagan National Airport (DCA) in Arlington is nearing the completion of the $1 Billion “Project Journey” transformation – with a new 14-gate concourse and two security checkpoint buildings as well as new retail, dining and more. The new concourse opened summer 2021 with the new security gates opening in Nov 2021. The project is the airport’s most significant expansion of facilities in nearly 25 years and will substantially improve customer convenience, passenger connectivity and security standards.

For the first time since Dulles Airport opened in 1962, travelers have a fast, easy, inexpensive rapid transit option for getting from Dulles to points throughout Northern Virginia when the Silver Line Metrorail extension opened in 2021.



Kings Dominion will debut Virginia’s first 4D Spin Coaster in spring 2022! Tumbili suspends riders on either side of the track as the cars flip continuously throughout the ride. Featuring state-of-the-art magnetic technology that induces and controls spinning, this 4D Spin Coaster will give riders the feeling of weightlessness as they cruise along the track tumbling and spinning head over heels in the rainforest tree canopy.


Liberty University Shooting Complex includes a pistol range, a rifle range, an instructional area, and a three-gun competition range, skeet and trap, 5 stand area, outdoor archery, sporting clays, and biathlon course.

The Liberty University Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25 yards pool, fitting nine Olympic-sized lanes or 20 short course lanes and has a movable bulkhead. A separate 17-foot-deep diving well can fit an additional eight short course lanes and has 1- and 3-meter springboards and a three-column tower, featuring 1, 3, 5, 7.5 and 10-meter platforms. Bleacher seating for 1,400 which wraps round three sides.



Set to open in summer of 2022, adjacent to the Hampton Roads Convention Center and Hampton Coliseum, this state-of-the-art facility is the largest of its kind in Virginia. Purpose-built for competitive aquatics, the Aquaplex was designed to host Mid-Atlantic and national competitive swimming and diving events, artistic swimming, water polo, and more. Spectator seating for 1,500 overlooks the eight-lane, 50-meter pool with two moveable bulkheads. Seating for 760 athletes occupies the wide, spacious pool decks for the smoothest of swim and dive event execution.

Virginia Beach

Woodstock Skate Park: Pack your skateboard and roll into Virginia Beach’s new cutting-edge skateboarding park. Built as a partnership between the City’s Parks & Recreation Department and the Hampton Roads Sanitation District, the 30,000 s.f. facility was designed by Team Pain Skate Parks and features a warm-up area, ledge runs, a quarter pipe, snake run and two-level bowl with waterfall. And it’s all built atop a 5.2-million-gallon wastewater tank surrounded by shaded viewing spots and native plantings

Virginia Beach Sports Center opened in the fall of 2020, a state-of-the-art facility that hosts a diverse roster of sporting events and tournaments. The new 285,000-square-foot complex has space for 12 basketball courts convertible to 24 volleyball courts and flexible floor space along with an Indoor articulated track.

The 85,000 square foot >Apex Entertainment Virginia Beach opened in December 2020 and offers 24 lanes of bowling, VR experiences, a 95+ game arcade room, mini golf, three escape rooms, go kart track, ropes course, axe throwing, a two story American cuisine restaurant and event space.



Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center: In Fall 2021, Arlington County opened a 92,000 square foot modern aquatics and recreation facility that serves the needs of health-conscious, fun-seeking and active individuals and families. Located near I-395 along the Potomac River, the center also features three full-size athletic fields overlooking views of Washington, DC.


Axe throwing is the newest, coolest target sport taking the world by storm! Maybe you have seen World Axe Throwing League (WATL) competitions​ on TV. Maybe a friend went to try ​out axe throwing and had a great time. Maybe you're just looking for something fun to do on an evening or weekend. Visit Chill-Axe-In’ in Brandy Station, VA, and spend an hour (or more) having fun, hanging out, and learning what the hype is all about!

Field House and additional lighting at Culpeper Sports Complex - Culpeper County and the Parks & Recreation Department will welcome its newest public facility - the Culpeper County Fieldhouse in the Fall of 2022.  The Fieldhouse will be located within the Culpeper Sports Complex – 16358 Competition Dr., Culpeper, VA 22701 and showcase over 16,000 SF of recreation and leisure space. 

Some of the facility’s signature amenities include a full-size high school gymnasium lined for basketball, pickleball, and volleyball, six (6) retractable basketball hoops, portable bleachers, dropdown court divider, patron lockers, three (3) multi-use classrooms, aerobics studio, and the Culpeper County Parks & Recreation offices. 

In addition to the Culpeper County Fieldhouse, the County is also installing state-of-the-art Musco LED Athletic Field Lighting on 4-soccer fields, 3-football fields, 2-softball fields, and 5-baseball fields at the Culpeper Sports Complex.  The lighting installation project has been divided into two phases.  Phase One includes the baseball and softball fields and will be completed by February 2022 and Phase Two includes the football and soccer fields and will begin mid-June 2022 and be completed by August 2022.

Culpeper County has begun construction of a Pickleball Complex at Mountain Run Lake Park – 16283 J.B. Carpenter Jr. Dr., Culpeper, VA 22701.  The facility includes four (4) Pickleball courts with permanently mounted nets, 10’ tall perimeter fencing, and 4’ tall court dividers.  These courts will become the first public outdoor Pickleball courts in Culpeper County. 


Construction continues on the Dulles Corridor Metrorail expansion project by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, bringing several new stations to Fairfax County and finally connecting Washington Dulles International Airport to downtown DC. Dulles Metro Station will be linked to the main terminal by a 300-meter pedestrian tunnel.  Known as the Silver Line, the extension is expected to open in the first half of 2022, making it even easier for passengers to travel between Dulles Airport, parts of Virginia and Washington, DC.


The new Fredericksburg Nationals Stadium and Fredericksburg Expo hosted baseball games as well as other sporting and corporate/association events, weddings, and more in 2021.


Professional rugby team moving to Loudoun County: Segra Field will be home to Major League Rugby giants Old Glory DC, drawing rugger fans from across the region.  While Ruby started in 2021, 2022 will be their official kick off season with a special Loudoun night Feb. 18.

Projected to open in February 2022 The Ballpark Loudoun will be a unique and fun active entertainment experience that combines integrated cutting-edge technologies, top-of-the-line skill development opportunities and a full-service restaurant and bar, to create a custom experience for all ages and skill levels. The Ballpark Loudoun will have four HitTrax™ Suites, which are interactive batting cages that combine eSports with our national pastime. Game opportunities range from team competitions to home run challenges and can take place in a virtual backdrop setting of more than 40 ballparks from across the country. 



The Horizons Edge Sports Campus is a 90,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art sports facility and event complex hosts events for sports, family activities, businesses it includes 4-basketball courts, 6-volleyball courts, a 200 x 100 foot multipurpose/indoor soccer field, and a family entertainment center.

The Atlantic Union Bank Center located on the campus of James Madison University seats 8,500 for basketball games, It features state-of-the-art technology such as video boards, lighting and sound. The facility opened for the 2020-2021 basketball season.



Bedford County has more than 120 holes of disc golf that are maintained by Bedford County Parks & Recreation. This includes a championship level course designed by 5x World Champion Disc Golfer Paul McBeth that opened earlier this year.  In September 2021, the 3rd annual Battle for Bedford Disc Golf Tournament was held and attracted almost 400 participants from 28 different states.


The Carilion Clinic IRONMAN® 70.3® Virginia's Blue Ridge triathlon will be held on June 5, 2022, in the Roanoke Valley in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. The race will include a 1.2-mile swim at Carvins Cove, a 56-mile bicycle ride through Botetourt County and a 13.1 mile run on the Roanoke River Greenway.


The Jackson River Sports Complex affords a first-class sports facility for events. The sports complex totals 75 acres; with 50 developed acres offering five lighted multi-use athletic fields/press box, lighted tennis courts, basketball courts, 20 acres for open turf sports (soccer, flag football), walking area, restrooms, gazebo, covered shelters with electricity, concession areas, playground equipment, ample parking and the River Rock Amphitheatre. The complex offers bleacher and festival seating – allowing fans to feel like they are part of the action.


Renovation of the award winning Moyer Sports Complex will begin in June 2022 and the complex will re-open March 2023.



The Appalachian Trail Center in Damascus is opened in spring 2021 and is a hub to the Appalachian Trail and the Town of Damascus.
