Chesapeake is a city full of history. Since the arrival of colonial settlers in 1620, Chesapeake has played a major role in the birth of the United States of America. On the Chesapeake African American Heritage Trail, you will discover stories of people and places that helped shape our nation. You can learn about the Battle of Great Bridge, which led Virginia on the course for independence, at the Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways Museum. With an emerging historical village, Chesapeake is home to the recently rehabilitated Cornland School, one of the earliest efforts in Virginia to formally educate African American children, and the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail. Formed by black people who were free, Cuffeytown is a historic community that can be traced to the 1700s.

Greenbrier Farms, Bergey’s Breadbasket, and Hickory Ridge Farm also offer special events throughout the seasons. Northwest River Park is a 763-acre park that offers disc golf courses, boating, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and a camping facility with 66 campsites and 2 rental cabins. You can access Elizabeth River Park by land or water, where you can fish, crab, and spend time with your family or kayak from the historic Great Dismal Swamp Canal to Lake Drummond, the largest of two natural freshwater lakes in Virginia.
