Getaway to Southern Style Romance in Lake Country
It’s time to experience ultimate romance “Southern” style. Grab your hiking boots, life jacket, and sense of adventure as you explore Southern Virginia through scenic drives, visiting our local wineries, incredible eateries, fall foliage on nature hikes, and around the lake in Virginia’s only lakeside town.
Day 1:
Unwind after a long journey to Lake Country at one of our charming and beautiful lodging options (such as Cooper’s Landing Inn & Traveler’s Tavern, a converted historic 1830s home with tastefully appointed rooms or private cottages) or perhaps opt for a weekend overlooking Virginia’s Largest Lake at Occoneechee State Park in one their 13 cabins.
After settling in, take a stroll through Virginia’s only lakeside Downtown - Clarksville. Clarksville is quickly becoming a hub for local artisan shops full of undiscovered treasures and keepsakes to remember your trip by. Keep up with the latest Fall fashions at Hite’s Clothing, who has served Southern Virginia for over 30 years.
Choose from an array of restaurants providing delicious, homemade meals all served with a touch of Southern hospitality. Try the Lamplighter Restaurant for a more casual dining experience or head back to Cooper’s Landing for a delectable surf or turf (or both!) meal served with the local wines & spirits or your favorite Virginia Craft beer.
Day 2:
No need to rush out, there’s no traffic on Kerr/Bugg’s Island Lake! There are plenty of exciting adventures and quiet coves awaiting your arrival. Explore the natural beauty of Lake Country in either a rented powered or paddle option from Clarksville Water Sports and become immersed in the “Lake Life.”
After a morning on the Lake, jump in your car and head to neighboring Chase City for a tour of the stunning and historic MacCallum More Gardens where you will be able to see the colors of fall in this 6-acre organically maintained botanical garden, arboretum, and wildlife sanctuary.
Plan to dine early, so you don’t miss an evening show at the Colonial Theatre in nearby South Hill. One of the few remaining vaudeville theatres of its era in Virginia, The Colonial features regional and touring shows as well as a rotating art gallery.
Day 3:
With it being Fall, the leaves will be changing and the birds will be flying South for the Winter, so how about seeing the beauty of the season from their point-of-view? Sand Dollar Seaplanes offers exciting seaplane tours from locations throughout Lake Country (Lake Gaston and Kerr/Bugg’s Island Lake). Experience the amazing colors, shorelines, and scenery of Lake Country from the sky and the seaplane sensation with water landings and takeoffs.
