Cape Charles is located in Northampton County on Virginia's Eastern Shore on a small peninsula, bordered by the Chesapeake Bay to the west, King's Creek to the north and Old Plantation Creek to the southeast. With a land area of 2,817 acres and a population of approximately 1,000 full-time residents, Cape Charles is the largest of Northampton's five incorporated town in terms of both land size and population. Since our inception in 1886, Cape Charles has evolved into a dynamic town capable of meeting the needs of a diverse array of residents, visitors, and businesses.
It offers a commercial center with shops, restaurants, antiques, museum, medical services, churches of many denominations, public beach, golf, harbor, marinas, boat ramp, sport fishing, summer rentals, B&B accommodations and the last remaining rail-barge in the country which regularly crosses the Chesapeake Bay to Norfolk.
Points of interest include the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, a 17.6 mile complex which spans the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge, and Kiptopeke State Park.
The Cape Charles Town Beach is located along Bay Avenue with beach access at the end of every block. The Cape Charles Town Beach is the only public beach on the Eastern Shore of Virginia that does not require an entrance or parking fee. Adjacent to the Town’s public beach, located at the southern end, is Cape Charles Fishing Pier and LOVEwork.
Central Park is conveniently located in the center of historic downtown Cape Charles. In 2010, Central Park was redesigned with a large pergola, gazebo, benches, and a beautiful fountain.
The Cape Charles Memorial Library is located on the corner of Mason Avenue and Pine Street.
